Rhino Room has been Adelaide's home of stand up since 1997, and for two decades that meant a Frome Street building with a rhinoceros mural by Mike Maka on the outside. When the site was slated for a thirty six storey apartment tower, a crowdfunding campaign moved the venue to level one at 131 Pirie Street, into a space that had sat derelict since Soda Room closed in the mid 2000s. Maka came back to paint a new mural on the new building, keeping the thread between the two.
It reopened in May 2017 and holds 375. Comedy still leads, with Adelaide Comedy resident here and the Rhino Room Late Show the longest running show at the Fringe, but live bands and club nights fill out the rest of the calendar and Lowlife runs in the basement below.
Dance events borrow the room when the format suits. Shrek Rave turned it into a neon swamp of ogre anthems and free green glow sticks for the night.
