Hotel Royal Torrensville

The Hotel Royal is an art deco pub on Henley Beach Road, and the first city venue Peter and Jenny Hurley bought when they took it on back in December 1979. It has stayed in the family since, and remains heritage listed for the part it plays in local life rather than for its architecture alone. An eight million dollar renovation ran across 2022 and 2023, overseen by son-in-law Scott Oakley and taking twenty one months through historian pushback, unplanned earthworks and rising costs. It delivered a courtyard with a retractable roof, a relocated tiled bar with booths, a new restaurant, the Back Pocket sports bar, and the Torrensville Loft upstairs with a wraparound balcony that lights up the road at night. Dance events are the exception rather than the rule. Dance Floor Heretics brought Mellow Monday here on the Adelaide Cup holiday, four hours of relaxed techno and house from BOF.
