AtmosCat is an Adelaide DJ working at the psychedelic end of electronic music, where psytrance meets dark techno and texture counts for more than tempo. The booking on record is [Sine]apse at Ancient World, a night from the Sineapse crew that turned the basement into a fluoro lit room under UV decor and ran on psytrance, dark techno and what the promoters called Zenon grooves. That last term is doing real work. Zenon is the Melbourne label founded by Sensient in 2003, and the sound named after it, minimal and hypnotic, jazzy around the edges, built for long narrative sets rather than peak time drops, is a distinct thing within psytrance. Playing to that brief means holding a room across an hour or more instead of chasing the next lift. He shared the bill with Biggins, on a door of five dollars before nine and fifteen after, which is about as unpretentious as a psychedelic basement gets.
