The May Wirth at Gluttony

Part of: Gluttony — see full lineup →
Rymill Park cnr East Tce & Rundle Rd, Adelaide
The May Wirth is one of Gluttony’s covered performance venues, a 350-seat big top appearing each Adelaide Fringe season in Murlawirrapurka / Rymill Park. Built for staged productions, it hosts circus, cabaret, dance, comedy, family shows, live bands and ensemble performances by day and night. Its enclosed tent provides weather protection while retaining the atmosphere and close audience connection of a traditional circus venue. Programs have included INFERNO’s fire and burlesque production, So Fresh! Hits of the 2000s, Women of Rock, Back to Black, CLUB Y2K and children’s magic, science and bubble shows. The venue is named for May Emmeline Wirth, the Australian circus and vaudeville performer celebrated for completing forward and backward somersaults on a running horse. Born in Bundaberg in 1894, Wirth appeared with Barnum & Bailey in the United States and became one of Australia’s best-known circus artists, making her name a fitting tribute for Gluttony’s big-top stage.
