High Spirits

High Spirits sits upstairs at 20 Gilbert Place, in the 1890s Quelltaler House building just off Hindley Street. Jamie Tierney opened it in December 2022 with a tiki lean and a taste for spectacle, and the theatre is very much the point: dry ice, fire breathed off the bar, and a Zombie that regulars keep coming back for. The room is built around luxe group booths and a bar on entry that catches the after work crowd, with an extensive cocktail list running from classics to house creations. It sits in what has become a small drinking precinct of its own, with Shotgun Willie's downstairs and Memphis Slims and Hains & Co a few doors along. Doors run Wednesday to Sunday from six. Dance events are occasional rather than weekly, and tend toward the darker end when they land. Elysium have run their goth night here, turning the room over to goth, industrial and darkwave with local and interstate DJs.
