Berri Hotel

The Berri Hotel sits on Riverview Drive overlooking the Murray, about two and a half hours upriver from Adelaide, and functions as the Riverland's all in one resort: hotel rooms and riverview villas, the Riverboat Bistro, Champs sports bar, the Goldfingers gaming room, conference facilities, a tennis court and an outdoor pool. For a generation of Riverland locals, though, the building means one thing above all else. The Vines was the hotel's nightclub, and for years it was where the region went out on a Saturday. It has since closed, which is why the reunion nights land the way they do. The Vines Returns brings it back for one night in September, classic anthems and big production in the room where they originally played, and it sold out well in advance. For a town of a few thousand people, a sold out club night is the clearest measure there is of what the place used to mean.
